Improvisation is not just the spontaneous act of making music. It is a reflection of the time, location, and circumstances that lead to that moment. Broadly speaking, the sum total of your life leads to an improvised musical statement.

The majority of the music I write involves some degree of improvisation. Composition can be a way to propel improvisation. I am perfectly happy to draw on traditional methods, or attempt to create something new. I refuse to be limited to or from any technique that advances the music.

Even when acting as bandleader, I enjoy  collaboration. I work with talented musicians, and I want to feature their abilities. I've seen groups that were all about the star player. I dislike that. Work with creative people, and give them interesting things to do.
